INTERNET TELEPHONY – A PATH BREAKING TECHNOLOGY

WHAT IS INTERNET TELEPHONY?

If you’ve never heard of IP or VoIP, get ready to change the way you think about long-distance phone calls. Put plain and simple, Internet telephony refers to a broad range of services over the Internet that was traditionally performed over the telephone line. These services include transmitting voice, video, and even fax.

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES IN TERMS?

There are numerous synonyms for internet telephony, but there are also some subtle differences in terms. Internet telephony is also known as VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol), IP Telephony, broadband telephony, and VoBB (Voice over Broadband).

While these terms all generally refer to the same thing, there is a small distinction between Internet telephony and VoIP. This distinction also may be different depending on the source of the information. On a basic level, Internet telephony is thought of as the entire range of services available with digital phone systems, while VoIP simply refers to digital phone calls. In other words, VoIP is a subset of Internet telephony. When all is said and done, there’s no harm from using the various terms interchangeably.

A CLEVER “REINVENTION OF THE WHEEL

VoIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) is quickly becoming an economical way of communication in today’s world. VoIP or IP phones are becoming cheaper or even free and can be conducted wherever you have a strong and reliable broadband connection. The IP phones have many benefits, and the main benefit to the VoIP phone is the cost.

Mobile phones and landline phones call cost money, while an IP phone call happens over the internet and costs only your broadband connection, and possibly a small amount to VoIP providers. However, these small costs are very minimal compared to a typical phone or mobile phone bill. International calls are also very cheap compared to landline calls. Since the internet connects one country to another, it becomes very cheap for you to call someone else in another country. This is a major benefit of a VoIP phone.

VOIP or IP Phones also have many features, such as conference facilities, call waiting, call forward, call transfer, caller ID, call mute etc. VoIP technology also allows you to make calls just using your computer microphone and speakers (or headphones).

IP telephony just makes sense, in terms of both economics and infrastructure requirements. More and more businesses are installing VoIP systems, and the technology will continue to grow in popularity as it makes its way into our homes. Perhaps the biggest draw to VoIP for the home users that are making the switch are price and flexibility. There are of course a few drawbacks attached to the use of VoIP, as is the case with any new technology, but the advantages largely outbalance its disadvantages

Above all else, VoIP is basically a clever “reinvention of the wheel.” The interesting thing about VoIP is that there is not just one way to place a call. its applications and the potential of this emerging technology, will more than likely one day replace the traditional phone system entirely.

VoIP phones are here to stay! The technology is continually advancing and changing and more and more calls are conducted over and through the internet. So if you are looking to the future, with your home and/or business, then look to VoIP phones.
